Aluminium

Aluminum is a light metal whose density is 2,700 kg/m3, that is, 2.7 times water density and a third of steel’s. Regarding to its physical appearance, it is brilliant white in color, with good optical properties and high reflection level for light and thermal radiations.

Due to its elevated level of oxidation, when it is exposed to the air a thin surface layer of aluminum oxide (Alumina AI203), which is water-proof and adhesive, is rapidly formed and stops the oxidation process, which makes it resistant to corrosion and very durable.

As mechanical caracteristics, it can be mentioned that it is highly malleable and allows for the manufacturing of extremely thin strips. Besides, it can be welded and easily worked mechanically due to its low hardness level. It is worth observing that to be used as structural material it’s necessary to alloy it with other metals to improve its mechanical properties as well as to apply heating treatments.

Sintecrom supplies this material in coils, strips and sheets according to customers’ needs. Please consult one of our representatives for additional information or services,

Uses and applications

Transport: As structural material in planes, cars, high speed trains, subways, tanks, ship superstructures, and bicycles.

Food packaging: Aluminum foil, cans, tetrabriks, etc.

Metallic carpentry: Doors, windows, bulkheads, enclosures, cabinets, etc.

Household goods: Cooking utensils, tools, etc.

Electrical transmission: Measured by volumen, its electrical conductivity is only 60% that of copper, but it is lighter and less costly.

Alloys

From a physical point of view, pure aluminum has very low resistance to traction and little hardness. But combined with other elements as an alloy, it acquires far superior mechanical caracteristics.

As there are different aluminum alloys in the market, it is important to consider the properties they offer, because in the manufacturing industry, some are much more convenient than others.
